MANILA, April 12 — The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Somali pirates released the Norwegian-managed chemical tanker "M/V Bow Asir” and its crew that included 19 Filipinos on April 10.

Foreign Affairs spokesman Eduardo Malaya said that Norway’s Salhus Shipping AS reported the "safe and expeditious" release of the vessel and its crews.

The vessel was “steaming to safety off Somali waters” to a destination that was not indicated but most possibly to the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, Malaya said.

The Norwegian government and the shipping company were coordinating with the Philippine embassy in Nairobi for the immediate repatriation of the crews, it was gathered.

Earlier, Malaya Salhus Shipping sent one of its senior officers to Manila to meet the families of the victims at the height of the negotiations for the release during the Holy Week. (PNA)
